Resolved Question: Afghani reporter sentenced to death for insulting Islam?
Sayed Parwez Kaambakhsh was sentenced to death on Jan. 22 by a three-judge panel in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif for distributing a report he printed off the Internet to journalism students. The article asked why below Islam men can have four wives but women cannot have multiple husbands. The court found that the article humiliated Islam. Members of a clerical council pushed for Kaambakhsh to be punished and he has been sentenced to death. He has appealed. I hear many accusations (usually from Middle Eastern Muslims but also from others) of needy or biased reporting and of collusion with or censorship by the U.S. military as pertains to the western news agencies. While I know that these accusations are patently untrue and are spread by people with agendas, it makes me wonder: does anyone really believe that the popular press in Islamic countries are free and that the information they provide is accurate? Please explain your answer logically, especially if it is yes. I am asking this question as I have seen so many people extolling the virtues of the various new outlets in the Middle East (such as Al-Jazeera) and criticizing the Western news agencies. This leads them inevitably to accuse Westerners of being "ignorant" of the "truth". I am curious as to who is really uniformed.

Resolved Question: What do Muslims think of this?
LONDON — An Afghan journalist has been sentenced to death for distributing an article downloaded from a Web site that was deemed to have "insulted Islam." The ruling by judges in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif betrayed the mounting level of Taliban-style intimidation of the press. Sayed Parwez Kaambakhsh's crime was to have passed around a piece questioning why Muslim women cannot have multiple husbands in the same way as their menfolk can legally take four wives. Mr. Kaambakhsh, a student journalist on the New World newspaper, was prosecuted for downloading this article, apparently gleaned from an Iranian Web site, and distributing it to his friends. On Tuesday, a court found him guilty of "insulting Islam" and sentenced him to death.
